Use knot-free #1 grade hardwood. (if you don’t mind the look of knots, use lower cost #2 grade.):
3/4″ thick (takes 1 x 6 x 6′, 1 x 4 x 4′ and 1 x 4 x 8′ long boards)
1/8″ thick plywood (takes a 22″ x 31″ piece
